Introducing A/Prof. Bruce P. Waxman OAM MBBS FRACS ARACMA MAICD

I am an honours medical graduate of Monash University and completed my general and colorectal surgery training in Melbourne, London, the north of England and Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I have been in consultant surgical practice, both in public and private, for 30 years, 20 years of which as Associate Professor, Monash University.
I have had stints as Clinical Sub Dean, managing medical students, Monash University, Director of General Surgery & Colorectal Surgery at Monash Health, and the Director of the Academic Surgical Unit - at Dandenong Hospital in the Southern Clinical School, Monash University with clinical, administrative and teaching duties.
I combined this with 20 years of commitment to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) on Council, Court of Examiners and countless other committees, instructing on Skills courses and developing Professional Development courses for peers and trainees, including on staff as Clinical Director of the Skills and Education Centre.
I had a similar number of years on the Council of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia & New Zealand (CSSANZ), developing policies and convening conferences, being granted an Honorary Life Membership in 2015.
Throughout there was an emphasis on Medical Education & Training and research, with university appointments at Melbourne and Monash universities.
All of these efforts were rewarded in 2014 with the award of the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for services to medicine as an administrator, clinician and teacher.

I retired from clinical practice in 2013 and transitioned to medical administration as Director of Medical Services with HealtheCare at The Valley and more recently Epworth Healthcare at Epworth Richmond with an emphasis on Clinical Governance, simultaneously becoming a surveyor with the Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS).
In the transition I hired a life style coach, who has guided my career, taught me the art of Executive Coaching and trained me as a Birkman personality inventory assessor.
I started Medical Writing editing medical student magazines 45 years ago and have since been on the editorial boards of several surgical journals, edited textbooks, written book chapters and countless articles for medical journals and continue to contribute, including a popular monthly column in the ANZ J Surg ‘Medicine in Small Doses’
I will continue a career in medical administrative practice and in addition will be pursuing the four (4) domains of BPW Consulting: Medical Education & Training, Clinical Governance, Executive Coaching, and Medical Writing.
